Grateful on Saturdays...

One of our very first followers of this blog, who leaves lovely comments, is Maxabella. Her blog is divine with lovely posts about family, sewing, crafting and baking, and blog design is definitely her forte too. Check out today's gingerbread men 'friends' image.

Anyway, Maxabella is spreading some 'sunshine' around the bloggy mum community by asking people to once a week write a post on something they are grateful for. Today's my first time I've really, really had a lot to be grateful for, after a hard last year personally. But that all pales in comparison.

Today I'm grateful that three incredibly special, treasured people in my life are still here, and battling on, and I just wanted to let them all know how grateful I am for them. To have them in my life. And how much I will do anything for you, and your families, anyplace, whenever. You are all my thoughts this week.

Sending so much positive thoughts and power your way I can see the air sparkling! xoxo

New Friends that Feel Like They Have Always Been in Our Hearts.

So, a little while back I hosted an Annual Pet Portrait Fundraiser Contest to benefit the Humane Society. It was a wonderful success for both my studio and for the Bangor Animal Shelter. Money was raised, animals were helped, people were proud of their award winning pets ... etc. All good stuff to be sure. BUT, what I didn't expect ... and am forever grateful for ... is the number of amazing people I met while organizing the event and while photographing peoples' pets ... and how many lifelong friends I believe I am now blessed with because of those efforts.

Topping the list of amazing new friends are Robin & John Kingsbury (Miss Robin is pictured below with my kiddos). You may remember seeing their dog Sir PAL (Piss-A-Lot) on my Flickr page. I love these people. Truly. Already. And hopelessly. And they are just as in love with us. How cool is that?

They invited us to their family camp for the 4th of July ... and it was as if I had always been there ... like I grew up knowing the place. Their extended family is so much fun. So loving, welcoming and talented. Robin's Aunt is an incredible artist who has the nerve to suggest that she "is just a nobody". Excuse me?! Well, no one is a "nobody" and I can't think of one other person I know who shares her artistic talent! But that's a Mainer for you ... hardworking, talented people who are more modest than they should be. Anyway, I love her already too. And her husband, Skip ... seen here being goofy :)

The kids had such a great time too! Isaac could barely stay out of the water ... and I caught Meaghan GENUINELY smiling on at least two occassions! And if that weren't enough ... my usually quiet and conservative husband talked up a storm and actually drank 4 beers. I have never seen the man drink more than 1 since he was in high school. So he was quite comfortable.

And it is so easy to be comfortable with these great folks. I love them, love them, love them. Good, good stuff.

And here's the thing ... the world is AWESOME. And I have learned that when I open myself up to the Universe ... am content with myself ... and approach people in an authentic and loving way ... that I found the most AMAZING people to share my life journey with. I can name at least a dozen people that I can call my friends now ... whom I have only known for 2-3 months ... and with whom I have the best times with. No expectations, just enjoying eachother ... endlessly. And I am so happy with it all. (I only hope that I give them all something in return as well ;)

I distinctively remember putting it out to the Universe that I wanted to meet and fall in love with some new friends ... as I was feeling a bit empty from some shallow and sometimes harmful friendships of the past ... and the Universe responded ... bountifully! What a lesson for my kids too --- become your best self --- love with wild abandon --- put all your desires out to the Universe (God/Source/etc) --- then reap the rewards of your love and trust.

Thank you Source! And thank you to all my rock-awesome friends. As Robin said, "There are no coincidences" ... and I am forever thankful that she and I crossed paths at the exact moment in our lives when we were meant to.

Love you all. You know who you are. If you don't --- then I need to remind you how much I love you! Thanks for all the lovin' in return. That is why we are here on earth --- for no other reason than to love one another as best we can.

Rock out the love ...
Jodi & family

Gabe.

There is so much I want to say about GABE .... his amazing family .... his incredible personality ... his appreciation for life, love, and friends ... his debilitating bike accident ... his painstaking but valiant physical recovery efforts ... and the support that so many people have shown for him because he is one of those incredibly special people who really touches the lives of others. I want to talk about all of this. But, I don't feel qualified. So, instead, I will send you to his website: http://www.getbettergabe.com/ where you can hear from his parents, girlfriend, and friends regarding his recovery in California ... and the efforts that are being made to raise money to bring him home to Maine.

And I invite you to this rockin' celebration FOR and ABOUT Gabe:

For the collosal list of door prizes and raffle winnings, you have got to check this out! Now that is some serious Gabe love going on.

Halis and I will be there. Hoping to see some of you too. No need to be a friend of Gabe's already ... but no doubt you will be in the future after meeting those who love him. That is how I have come to love Gabe myself :)

Love,

Jodi

Serendipity Farm "Photo Shoot".

This past Saturday, I spent most of the day with my good friend, Tom ... photographing horses at a lovely farm in Bangor, Maine: Serendipity Farm.

Tom and I are both looking to work on our photography skills ... build our portfolios ... and just enjoy the company of a fellow photographer. So I made a phone call to a couple of horse farms to see if I could gain an invite for us to shoot some pics around their farms. When I called Val ... I knew her farm would be perfect. She was so inviting and appreciative. And I was right.

Val is an inspiration. She only began riding horses when she was 48 (I think) and within 10 years, if I have my story correct, she bought her dream horse farm and has been enjoying her life to the fullest. (Had she not said a word, I would have no idea that she was in her 50s! Living your dream makes you youthful, I think!) Her farm is so great ... has a lovely river in the background ... lots of customers ... several incredible horses and dogs.

I fell in love with one of the horses: Cashmere. And hope to return to visit her soon. Apparently, she would be difficult to ride, but Val has offered me a ride on another big guy when I am intersted. (When you put yourself out there - wonderful connections can be made :)

I have been SO slow in uploading pics from this great day, but some can be seen here. (I will continue to upload to this link as I am able). Some of Tom's pics can be seen here (he took the above photo - for which I am entirely grateful).

And speaking of collaborating with Tom - he is the best. Here is a man that has VERY limited eye vision --- but unlimited artistic vision. He is an inspiration to me and a great guy to be around. I highly recommend shooting with a friend, because you will both see things so differently, and can assist one another in differing strengths and weaknesses. I think I took better photos because of his insights and perspective. I hope I gave him some help as well.

Anyway - more photos will be forthcoming and some may even show up for sale in my shop. Meanwhile, I need to get Val a disc of the pics taken at her farm - as I always offer copies to those who are generous enough to invite me to expand my portfolio at their homes & farms. (Are you interested in a visit?)

Hope you have a wonderful weekend! I am hoping to get out and take some more photo goodies tomorrow.

Love,
Jodi

Nothing Left to Give : Temporarily

I am feeling totally tapped out right now (thus the above photo). Sure, lots of wonderful things are going on our our lives, in my photography, in my parenting, in my marriage, and in my creativity ... BUT all that is taking a backseat (like, a backseat on the back of a very long bus) because my family has been experiencing some highly emotional "stuff" right now. Though I know in my heart that it is all temporary, it doesn't stop me from feeling the pain of it all in the here and now.

For starters, my Daddy goes in for open heart surgery tomorrow at 5am. And though I know in my brain that all will go well ... my heart is aching at the mere thought of losing my Daddy ... no matter how slim the possibility may be. Secondly, my brother - whom I love so dearly that it hurts - is going through some pain right now that I would do anything to take away from him. He is private about this, so I will not explain here. But I think of him every minute of the day and wonder what wisdom I can impart that would miraculously take his pain away ... to no avail. Then, my sister - the woman who means more to me than she will ever know - is also experiencing some turmoil in her life that - although I know the outcome of it will be far more wonderful than she can see right now - her tears are breaking my heart. And I again, seek wisdom to help her through this (though she has always been far wiser than me). Next, (as if this weren't enough) my husband is on the brink of losing his job at a time when the economy is at its worst. Not a good feeling. We know we will get by ... and in fact, we welcome some change, but change takes getting used to ... and the "man of the house" feels much pressure and anxiety over how to take care of his family under these circumstances. Oh and then there is my best friend who is has been given a medical diagnosis that is freaking her out ... and is awaiting more tests to fully diagnosis her condition. I wait with her and pray for the best.

So, there is alot going on around here. And though I know that we - as a family - will all get through this together - I feel "tapped out" right now. I want to change everyone's pain, calm their fears, save them from themselves (in some cases), and wave a magical wand to release all suffering. BUT, I totally recognize that walking through suffering and pain, brings us closer to our greatest selves, our greatest joys ... and closer to our soul's purpose. So, it must be what it must be. And the doors that will open at the end of my loved ones' journeys through their pains will be more miraculous than I could ever dream. I know - I have been there. And I have witnessed the beauty of the transformations of others as well. So, I trust. Or, I try to ... except when I want to kick the asses of those who have recently wronged both my brother and my sister ... but hey, I am no Thich Nhat Han.

I hope you recognize that this post is not a pity party for me - or anyone else. Just a telling of the TEMPORARY dark areas that we have found ourselves in .... so that I can later tell you of the beauty and light that comes of it all in the near future. And I suppose this post also serves as an explanation of why my posts have been so erratic these days and will likely continue to be for a little while.

I thank you all for your prayers, your friendships, and your inspirations. You are amazing gifts to me, and I hope I have given you some beauty in return.

In hope and love,
Jodi

A New Skill. Hopefully.

I am learning a new skill. Hooray. Thanks to my good friend Missy, I am finally learning to knit, something I have always wanted to try. Very exciting stuff.

She tells me there are loads of tutorial knitting videos on YouTube. I haven't explored that yet, but let me know if you find anything wonderful worth sharing. Meanwhile, I think I am going to try to tackle a hat for Isaac. Then ... who knows ...
Enjoy your day.
Love,
Jodi

We Are Back ...

And it feels so good!

Thank you for your patience ... we finally have internet (did you hear me scream in delight?). And WOW, I cannot believe how lost I have felt without it for the past month. I felt so disconnected in so many ways. But now ... I am ready to jump back into the blogging world that I have missed so much. I look forward to reading up on all my fave blogs ... as well as to share the goodness of our new life in the "city". And life is SO good here. Really. Isaac is so incredibly happy to be surrounded by friends and family. Halis and I too.

One friend that Isaac is so particularly happy to see more of now is his cousin Sydney. He is so very smitten with her ... as can be seen by these photos...

playing dress up

playing with bubbles

They are so good together :)

So, thanks for holding in there ... and for encouraging my return to blogging. I am so glad to be back and look forward to some conversations with all of you.

Enjoy the day!

Jodi

Freezer Paper "Screen Printing"

My new friend, Celtic Mommy, suggested that my family might like to create our own "screen printed" t-shirts using a simple freezer paper method that she learned over at The Angry Chicken. I had heard of this type of craft before, but hadn't gotten around to trying it ... until I saw what she and her 3 year old produced - and then just had to participate!

So Isaac and I headed over to our best friend's house (Aunty Missy) ... with all the fixins' ... and began to create some masterpieces:

I have yet to produce any sort of tutorial on this blog, but the instructions for for making freezer-paper "screen printed" creations are pretty simple:

* Find or create the image that you would like to put on your cloth.
* Trace it onto the matte side of freezer paper.
*Carefully cut out image.
* Iron freezer paper onto cloth (shiny side down).
* Slip paper or cardboard inside of your shirt (or other material) so that your paint does not seep through.
* Liberally apply textile paint (other acrylic paints will also do) to your template - trying not to create brush strokes by applying pressure - just sort of move the paint around and let it seep in.
* Allow to dry for a couple hours OR blow-dry (we opted to blow dry).
* When dry - carefully peel off freezer paper, then heat set your work by placing a sheet of paper over the image and then iron over that paper. It is important not to iron the image directly at this point...but you may do so later.
* Lastly, ENJOY. And wash as normal.

My girlfriend "screen printed" the most amazing silhouette of her daughter on to a sweatshirt. She did this by using a photo she had taken of her daughter. She simply enlarged the photo on her computer, printed it out, traced the outline onto freezer paper, and followed the rest of the steps. It looks SO great ... and sh was able to carefully transfer some nice detail - like the feathering of her hair, etc. My girlfriend has an amazing way of taking every art project a step further:

She joked that she would apply a silhouette image of each of her children to the rear pockets of her jeans. I think its a great idea! Then her kids would move along to the beat of her booty :)

I hope you all find the time to share in the freezer paper fun. Please feel free to ask any questions, as my directions may be lacking.

Enjoy!

Tree Hunt at Piper Mountain : 2007

I LOVE rituals. And heading to Piper Mountain with my friends and family in order to pick out our Christmas trees has become a recent, but favorite ritual. It has been a long time ritual of our dearest friends, and we are so thankful to be a part of it.

You can see some fun photos from our outing by clicking on our Flickr account to the right ... But here are some of the highlights:

Our best friends.

Devon shakes the trees in order to make some really cool photos!

Meaghan experiences several "white washes".

Isaac learns how to throw snowballs (thanks Grampy!).

Daddy and his boy.

My favorite photo of the day.

Meaghan and her Grampy.

Ahh... and the evening fire. Gotta love it :)

And speaking of rituals and traditions, Halis and I plan to incorporate some new ones into our lives thanks to some great suggestions I have received from some new books. I hope to share them with you soon and to hear of yours as well!

Lots of love,
Jodi

Encouraging Missy.

My best friend in life, Melissa, is an amazing artist. She has been beading since she was a young girl. She grew up on " Indian Island" which is a Penobscot Indian Reservation in Maine. It was there that she was taught various native arts throughout her childhood. She does amazing work and really enjoys it.

She made this absolutely gorgeous necklace for my most recent birthday. Pictures do nothing to show its beauty. I know nothing about beadwork, but this necklace has 3 layers of intricate and interweaving beading. I am wild for it! And I have even worn it with a grey hanes t-shirt :) What the heck.

Anyway, I have been encouraging Missy to sell her work on Etsy for over a year now. And she has yet to do it. She told me quite a while ago that she doesn't like to sell her work, because she feels the pressure to mass-produce it which then takes the fun out of it. I believe that she can still enjoy making select pieces - at her leisure - and post them to Etsy as she feels compelled to. And I KNOW that folks would buy her work!

So, here is where YOU, as my blog reader, come in :) Take a good look at the above necklace, admire its beauty, and leave a comment of encouragement to Melissa (Missy) to share her talents with the world!

Thank you so much.

Jodi

We Shall Prevail: Let the Rebuilding Begin!

A few days ago I wheeled this cannon into the front yard and placed a tattered and burned - yet still glorious - flag by its side. Somehow - for me - it symbolized our family's resolve to move past this sad event and rebuild my parents' home. I have never been one for aggressive patriotic symbols ... but this just felt right. And it gave me some strength. That's what counts.

The kids, Sydney & Isaac, seemed to find it interesting and meaningful as well.

And here they are - resolved to rebuild! (Or maybe they just like playing on large tractors ???)

Thank you for all the love & well wishes. My parents are holding up well. They have alot of support and all will be well - of that I have no doubt :) I will keep in touch regarding the rebuild.

Love,

Jodi

Gratitude After a Tragedy (or otherwise titled: What Could Have Been a Tragedy But Was Instead Filled With Blessings).

My parents just suffered a terrible house fire. And truth be told, I have no energy (or want) to explain the drama of it all ... but it was quite a horrifying event. Instead, I would love to explain all the blessings that we experienced both during and after this event.

* My parents live deep in the woods. The fire was first discovered by strangers working across the street at American Concrete. These men called 9-11, then ran across the street, broke into the home, and rescued every one of my Mom's exotic birds ... even as the roof was caving in! Imagine that, strangers coming to the rescue of our birds ... at the risk of their own lives. AMAZING!

* Jennifer, the neighbor who lives three doors down at Country Kennel ran over to the fire, knowing my Mom has dogs and cats and quickly went to work helping the fire fighters to find & identify all the critters. Then she offered her kennel up to house all our animals. (The birds and cats are currently being spoiled there). Jennifer and her husband stayed throughout the day to offer any and all assistance. They brought over every pet supply that could possibly be needed. Just incredible people!

* My parents were at my house when I got the call that their house was on fire. It was Jennifer who called and she became the liaison to all of us as we rushed to the fire. She and her workers were so generous with their time and efforts. We are humbled by their generosity.

* Due to several phone calls from myself & my parents, the fire fighters were finally able to rescue my Mom's precious dogs who were caged under the stairs where no one was able to see them initially. They were all saved :) The fire fighters were such heroes about making sure to get every pet out of there.

* While the fire fighters were there, two cats were found. One was rescued from underneath a bed that is now burnt to a crisp. Another was found outside. But a third was still missing and presumed dead (as the upstairs was completely destroyed and that is where he usually hid). Then, late that night, as Halis was searching through rubble upstairs ... he heard a cat growl. He found the third cat hidden within some rubble .... unscathed!

* My best friend Melissa was the first "family member" on the scene. I called her as soon as we got the call because I knew it would take us nearly an hour to get to my parents home and I wanted her to instruct the fire dept on how to find all pets. She was AMAZING! I honestly don't know how I could ever live without that woman. I ask her to do some of the most gut-wrenching tasks ... and she does them without a second thought because she is so in love with me too. She kept the press away, helped to find animals, told the fire fighters about some important mementos that we would want pulled from the fire (she rescued a very important photo of my Pepere), kept me from fainting after I arrived, and made sure my son was whisked away and played with so that he didn't experience any of the drama. And during the aftermath, she kept spirits high ... and well .... I just can't tell you how important is was to all of us that she was there. I believe that she was the glue that kept us all from losing "it". I am so thankful for her .... and I am sorry for the rest of the world that she is all MINE :)

* My extended family, that I like to most affectionately call "The Rez" (because they are all native and all come from the same Indian Reservation), all came together to help my parents both during and after the fire. They are my self-created family ... and they were also amazing! They never ceased in their efforts to make my parents life easier ... and they still haven't stopped. Days later, Johnny (also known as Isaac's Grampy) has been doing all he can to do his best by my parents. And Deanna (also known as Isaac's Nanu) has continued to offer everything she possibly can (including lots of good advice) in order to help. I am just so incredibly thankful for them as well.

* My biological family from NH - Aunt Lisa, Uncle Jim, Uncle Bill, My brother Jamie, all made the 4-hour trip to my parents' home in order to help them both physically and emotionally in every way they could. They too were absolutely amazing. The love that was shared was just brilliant. They too were burdened with grief for my parents, but they made every effort to find the energy to assist my parents in every need. It was beautiful to watch that kind of love within a family --- that kind of instantly coming together to support a family member in need. It is priceless.

* Also, family and friends who heard the news but could not be physically present sent prayers, offerings of help and love and support. The prayers were most appreciated! And the love was certainly felt.

* I am also SO grateful for all the precious items that were rescued from the fire ... many handmade quilts, very special photos, heirloom items, etc. My mom and I both felt as though someone (Pepere and Mimi) were guiding the hands of those men and woman to collect that which was most dear to us. There was only one very sad loss for me and I will blog about that later (but even that will be just fine after all).

* Many community members came by to offer their help. Some brought donuts and dog biscuits, others brought their expertise and assistance in important details (thank you Ryan!). Some business members brought offerings of the use of any of their equipment (thank you Family Tree Landscaping!) I think my parents were shocked to see that the human race is capable of such generosity (they had little faith in that before). Add that to the growing list of blessings - my parents may have some renewed faith in the beauty of humanity!

* A local policeman gave Isaac a stuffed dog to enjoy - to take some of the trauma of the day away. How sweet is that - police now keep goodies in the trunks of their cars for kids in order to reduce their trauma.

* The fire men & women were so inspirational. Not only did they make every effort to save my parents' home ... and risked lives to save the animals ... but they also went out of their way to grab any sentimental items they could find. I wanted to kiss the feet of every one of them. I felt so humbled by them. I hope Isaac is a firefighter someday :)

* Also, though I cannot elaborate about it here ... but there was an incredible healing that took place in my Mom's heart that day of the fire ... she gained some insights into some personal matters that I really believe she could have only gained through this fire .... which I think has cleansed her soul in more ways than she even realizes. Fire can do that. That is what I am most thankful for ... and if I am right ... and she has begun some incredible healing journeys that were initiated by this event ... than I am ever so thankful for that seemingly devastating fire.

* Oh yeah, how could I forget ... I am also so grateful for my loving husband, who has dropped everything in his life to take good care of my parents. The man who said that he would never live with my Dad, (EVER!) has sincerely offered (time and time again) for them to move into our house while theirs is being built. He loves them so much and is determined to make this easier on them by doing whatever he can. God Bless a Good Husband :)

Well, there is likely so much more to say about the blessings that were experienced that day. And though it was horribly sad to watch my parents house go up in flames ... we are all truly blown away by how much our lives have been touched in positive ways by this as well.

My Mom is already picking out her beautiful new home ... and what better way to heal than to get excited for the future :)

Love,
Jodi

Inheritance II.

You gotta love my Father-in-Law. I know I do and I have never met the man. Sadly, he died when Halis was 11 years old. However, he was one of the doctors in the delivery room on the day I was born. So, perhaps we did meet and the rest was destiny.

Anyway, I think he and I would have enjoyed one another on so many levels. Especially our appreciation for the female form. Cemal (that is his name) was wildly in love with his wife and yet still had an appreciation for the beauty of all women that did not create jealousy. (This reminds me so much of my own Pepere with whom I loved to watch the Solid Gold Dancers so that we could comment on all the sexy ladies). As some of my readers may remember, Halis and I inherited a beautiful picture of a most gorgeous scantily clad woman that now resides in our stairwell. This was Cemal's and we inherited it after Halis's mother's passing. Now I present to you another of our inherited treasures ...

... the naked-lady-on-a-bear-skin-rug-by-the-fire puzzle! It is called the "Executive Puzzle". (Apparently all executives of the 60's were heterosexual men or lesbians.) And I love it! You should have seen the effort that everyone put into trying to complete THIS puzzle. The great mystery was just how naked she was as the box only gave you a glimpse of what lay ahead. So, my parents, my friends, the kids, myself and Halis all coordinated efforts to complete the picture. It was so much fun. And it turned out that she was (as you can see) very tastefully photographed.

Here is some of the chaos that surrounded the efforts to complete the puzzle...

And I absolutely love that the kids were involved (both mine and my best friend's) for so many reasons. I love that we are raising them to appreciate their bodies and the bodies of others. I love that we are not making sexuality a "dirty" or shameful thing, but rather a beautiful thing that is to be appreciated. I love that they see that we, as their Mommies and Daddies, are happily married couples that are wildly in-love, monogamous, and sensual beings. And that they too can benefit from finding a lifelong partner that they are crazy about while still appreciating the beauty of other human beings all around them.

Ahhh... and that is both my Dr. Ruth and my parenting lesson for the day :)

Love,
Jodi

PACKING FOR FERRY BEACH.

Time to pack for another week of fun, relaxation, and spiritual growth at Ferry Beach! Every year, for the past several years, our family heads to Saco, Maine for a week long "Friends and Family" conference at the Unitarian-Universalist Conference Center - Ferry Beach. I lovingly call it church camp :)

As always, I am looking forward to it. But this year, unless I can convince Meaghan otherwise (and I am trying), Isaac and I will be the only ones attending.... though Halis will make a couple of appearances. Last year, Isaac wasn't walking. So, this year should be so fun for him (and less of a back-breaker for me)!

Now it is time to pack. These trips require lots of careful packing ... and this may take me a few days. Not to mention that I need to spend the next few days convincing Meaghan that she REALLY wants to go (she has had another vacation offer). And Daddy is starting to get some anxiety over not seeing his boy for a while ... so they are needing some special Daddy-and-Me time. All sorts of prep for just 7 days away!

I will be back here tomorrow - till then, I leave you with some pics from last year's conference. The rest I will post on Flickr within a day or two. Enjoy!

A Letter to My Son. RE: "What We Do"

Dear Isaac,

Today, I took you to the place that I used to work at for the two years before you came home to us. So many of my former co-workers have become great friends of mine. Most of them prayed for you throughout our adoption journey. And many of them have been there for you in so many ways... sometimes in person and always in spirit.

You had a wonderful time visiting with them. They all loved on you and admired your growth and gentle nature. It was a most pleasant visit. And as always, Mommy was so proud to show off her special boy.

As we visited these friends, I was often asked questions about what I was doing with my days now that I am no longer working. And I found these questions difficult to answer. See, many Mommies either have to or choose to work during the day. And your Mommy chose to stay home with you. Neither choice is right or wrong. The best choice is the choice that is "right" for that person. And for Mommy, the best choice was to stay home and to raise you.

However, when people choose to work, they are often used to the idea of "doing something" that produces results that can be seen or quantified. They might answer a question such as "What have you been up to?" by answering something like, "Well, my team just completed this new project here that has now saved the company over $30,000. And I am now working on creating a new filing system that I just learned about at the conference I attended in Reno." Or sometimes they might defer to their personal life and say something like, "Well, my daughter just made the softball team so we have been attending alot of games. And we just began construction on a new living room. Oh yeah, and Justin made honor roll." These answers are all perfectly fine. It is just that you & Mommy can't answer those questions in quite the same ways. That is why I find these questions hard to answer.

Here are a few ways in which I answered some questions about what we do with our days:
" Oh, we mostly just hang out outside and play with the chickens, read books, and drive around on the four-wheeler.... things like that."
" Yeah, we don't come into town too often, we mostly just enjoy our family, friends and one another. We visit them and they visit us."
" We love to dance and sing and go for walks. Sometimes I do a little sewing."
" Isaac loves to hang out with his pets and prefers being outside and dancing in the grass while talking to the sky. Sometimes we throw rocks in the pond down the street. Isaac loves that."

Most of the time, people think I am a little nutty when I give these answers. But the truth is, that is how we enjoy our lives. We live very simple lives and YOU LOVE IT! You rather play in mud puddles than play with toys. You rather sing and dance than watch tv. You would stay outside all day long and simply play with the grass and rocks. And you are SO incredibly happy. One can just see it in how secure you are with yourself and with your place in the world.

And another truth is, Mommy has never been so sure of anything in her life as she is now ... I am absolutely sure that what I am doing now ... by gently guiding you through your days ... is the greatest, most profound and rewarding experience I have ever had. And that although I may not be able to speak of our experiences in terms of "results" or "accomplishments", I know that the way that we gently move through our days ... going wherever the spirit moves us ... and doing whatever feels good at that moment ... is going to achieve the most incredible result of all - your self-fulfillment & contentment.

So, though I may often feel at a loss for words to explain just what it is that we do with our days ... I am happy for that. Put most simply, we spend our days enjoying ourselves, our world and one another. (I will remember that the next time that someone asks me!)

With all my love ... and looking forward to a simple, gentle & loving day tomorrow ....

Memorial Day Photos.

What a wonderful Memorial Day weekend we had! I can't think of a better way to spend a weekend than hanging out at the homestead with family and friends ... relaxing, playing, eating and chatting. This is what life is about.

I already shared the amazing experience that I had witnessing my Mom thoroughly enjoy Isaac on Sunday. And now I shall share the rest ...

After my parents left late Sunday afternoon, we all took a ride on our ATVs. Here is Isaac sporting his helmet (it's a hockey helmet). What a cool guy, eh?

The following morning (Memorial Day), Halis and Meaghan went out riding through the woods. They spent 3 hours jaunting through the mud and having a great time of it! Here is Meaghan - quite proud of her muddy four-wheeler....

Then at 1pm, our good friends came over for a cookout.... Melissa, Devon, Sydney, Jeannie, Vince, Minguin, Mincess, and Lilianna. Halis did the grill cooking ... and was a sport about wearing one of my vintage, "thrifted" aprons ...

We ate. We talked. We ate again. And the kids had a great time playing with eachother and especially with the chickens ...

Meanwhile, Halis continued painting our new porch (he never relaxes for long) ...

Later in the day, at Devon's request, Halis took the older kids down to the pond for some fishing (though Isaac did not go with them, he insisted on posing in the photograph).

And much later, after a long day of enjoying the outdoors, the kids all gathered on our bed to enjoy a movie. I am wild for this picture of all the kids peacefully and lovingly hanging out with one another...

And the more comfortable they got, the more they cuddled with one another. Isn't this wonderful??? ...

Thank God for times like these. These are the moments that we cherish and that our kids will remember fondly.

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend!

Love,

Jodi

One Year Ago Today.

One year ago today, my baby Isaac came home. One year ago today, we became a family. One year ago today, we were blessed in ways we never could have previously imagined. One year ago today, the most amazing human being I have ever known began to call me "Mama".

My dear Isaac,
I can never begin to express to you all that you mean to your Daddy and I. But through your whole life, we will try. That is a promise. We feel so honored and blessed to be your parents. And we promise to spend our whole lives showing you just how much we love you and believe in you.

For the past year, our lives have been filled with the most intense joys. Daddy still gets goose bumps when he sees you smile. And when Mommy watches you play and grow in new ways, I begin to cry happy tears. We love you so very much Isaac.

Isaac, you are an amazing little man. In just one year, you have blossomed into a curious, loving, gentle, smart, independent, playful, and very secure boy. You love your family, your home and your pets. You are crazy about your Mebay, Bobo, Poppy, Auntie, Sydney, Devon, Nanu, Grampy and Auntie Sue (and many more). You love to play with farm animals, trucks, dirt, sticks, water, and your stuffed frog. You are crazy for horses (so Daddy may have to buy you a pony later in life). You love to watch Babe, Nemo and Elmo. And Nanny McPhee makes you crack up laughing.

You cuddle up with Mommy and Daddy every night. We read books and wrestle. You love to give us kisses and hold our hands. You are so very loving and gentle. And if you could be with Meaghan (Mebay) every moment of your life, you would be ever so grateful! She makes you smile so big and so naturally. You light up when she is around, and so does she.

Son, we look forward to another amazing year with you... and all the years after. You are the sunshine of our lives. And we will always make sure you know that.

We took you to the airport today to celebrate your first anniversary home. This is the airport that you came home to ... in Daddy's arms. We wanted to return to it so that we could remember those special moments when you first came off the plane. You were greeted by Mommy, Meaghan, Sydney, Bobo, Auntie, Nanu, and Grampy... and many strangers who were so happy to see you as well.

Anyway, here are some photos that we took of you today. You have grown so much since last year....

And here are your very proud parents:

We love you to the moon and back infinity times two,

Mommy & Daddy
