Ink the Faith Gallery Show: Art Unleashed!
Studio 36 was the most happening place to be in Bangor, Maine on May 21st, 2011 (or perhaps in all of Maine? all of the US? in all of the Universe!?). That evenings Ink the Faith exhibition was not your average art show! For starters, the exhibit featured the beyond amazing original art pieces by area artist Rebecca Hickman (aka Bex) ...
Her intricately detailed ... spiritually significant ... ink and paper illustrations are absolutely stunning. To see the work up close is such a visual treat ... and then to hear the significance of the abundant symbolism in her work is nearly mind-blowing. Wait ... WHAT!? You weren't there!? Well ... please do yourself a favor and visit her website to see most of her work. And if you are in the Bangor area, drop by This Handmade Life to view and perhaps purchase one of her original pieces (some priced ridiculously low) and/or a limited edition print.Ok ... so if you weren't there ... Bex's art isn't all you missed! But I will fill you in ...
First, you missed the scrumptious cupcake delights of Miss Kathy Flagg ... a local baker who is taking her hobby to a whole new level of yummy goodness ... She designed her cupcakes to match the ink drawings of the fabulous Miss Bex. And the flavors? She matches those to the events as well. She is A-Mazing! Want to try some of her goodies? Well, then you have yet another reason to drop by This Handmade Life ... as she sells some of her edible delights right in the shop ... and hopes to expand the offerings soon. And if you missed it - we are truly sorry ... but do not despair ... there will be loads of opportunities for more of these sorts of events at Studio 36! And we will continue to post about the events of Rebecca Hickman, Kupcake Kuties, Aether Arts, Paradigm East, and Ao Arts. They have all become part of the Studio 36 family ... and we are so excited to see what all of them (collectively and individually) will be up to in Bangor and around the world.
Stay tuned.
And to those who joined us for the Ink the Faith exhibition ... you KNOW how amazing it was ... and thanks for joining us. See you again soon :)
Love,
Jodi & the Studio 36 Crew
PS. Special Thanks goes out to ... School Street Framing (where all the cool kids get framed) ... Eric Robbins and his mead making skills ... and the lovely women of Women With Wings!

Getting My Gypsy On.
She, like me, has a thing for pirates, zombies, the ocean, cephalopods, dancing when the mood strikes her, flashy make-up, gypsies, art in all of its forms, and basically putting herself "out there". She lives HERSELF. She is the me that I long to be.
Recently, she has joined us at Studio 36 as our "in-house" make-up artist. And we couldn't be happier about it. She offers make-up, hair and outfitting for our clients. But that's far from all she does. She leads a fantastic belly dance troupe ... she threads ... she weaves magical goodness into hair ... and she is a great photographer. (There is more, but you likely wouldn't believe me!).
So, since she has joined us, I have been UN-patiently waiting for my first appointment with her ... to transform me into some part of my inner self ... giving her full control to do as she wished .... and it looked a little something like this ...

(Thank you Bex Hickman for documenting the progress!)
And here are some of the results ...

I couldn't be happier with them. (Though there are more to show later). I see ME in these photos. An aspect of me. And I want to see more. So, I plan on many, many appointments with Ao. She amazes me.
As for the last picture, I knew that I wanted a tearful Gypsy look ... so I asked her to help create one. Little did she know that my Pepere (a hero of my life) once gave me a large framed piece of art - of a gypsy woman ... looking off ... and crying. I always wondered what she was crying about. And in order to create that somber look, I remembered that anonymous gypsy woman ... then my Pepere who shared her with me ... and thus, my sadness was real (I miss him so much) ... and well captured.
Thank you Miss Ao. Glad to have you on-board ... and glad to have your inspiration all around me.
Please drop in to see her work! Or contact her for an appointment ... (207)370-8701.
Love,
Jodi

This Handmade Life: In Brick & Mortar.
So ... I have been pondering (for months now) ... how I could create some sort of partnership between my love for all things handmade ... and my photography studio. I had signed a lease for a space (see my previous post) ... that was to be the photography studio. BUT the stars aligned in a different way than I had planned ... and now ... through a series of fortunate events ... I now have rented additional space in the same building ... and am able to re-introduce a new (and much improved) Studio 36 ... as well as ... a retail shop full of handmade goodies! And the shop title? You guessed it (pretend you did) ... This Handmade Life.
This Handmade Life will be filled with goodies from my Etsy site, as well as goodies from other vendors. We will also host some fun crafting classes and get-togethers. Very exciting stuff!
Want a peek at some of what the shop will contain? Well, here are a few items we will soon be carrying in the shop ...
First ... some fun, geek & chic jewelry ...

Some sweet, sweet, hand-knitted finger puppets of every variety ... including Harry Potter ...

And these awesome-can't-wait-to-get-my-hands-on kits for making felted critters (so easy to do & with awesome results) ...

As you can see ... we plan to carry some whimsical, out-of-the-ordinary goodies. Lot's more to come ... but I wanted to give you a sneak peek as to some of what we will be carrying on opening day. When is that you wonder? Our "soft-opening" is February 2nd ... and our Grand Opening is during the Downtown Bangor Art Walk scheduled for March 18th.
170 Park Street, Bangor, ME
Hours are 11-5 Wednesday thru Saturday.
Looking forward to all of it! And wait till you see the photography studio! I am so in love with it. Other area photographers are too ... and we have created a co-op. For details, please see http://www.studio36bangor.com/.
Love,
Jodi

Studio 36 Has a New Location!
Hooray! The lease has been signed and for the next couple of years (or longer) our photography studio will be located at 170 Park Street (formerly the Peace & Justice Center) in Bangor, ME. We are so very excited. This space is gorgeous ... and is also the home of One Lupine Fiber Arts ... as well as the new home of my friend Andy Hurtt. There are some wonderful plans for the rest of the building as well --- very artsy plans --- and this space is going to be filled with creativity, joy, and all that is good. I can't wait!We hope to be open in early January ... and will be sure to have a open house bash asap. Will share plans as we create them.
Thanks for sharing in our enthusiasm!
Love,
Jodi
